An Update on Downey Medical Center

This afternoon, there was an active shooter incident at our Orchard Medical Office Building at the Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Downey. A suspect has been detained. We’re extremely pleased that all of our patients, members, employees, and physicians are safe, and no injuries were reported. Events like this can create deep mental stress, and we’ve provided EAP services to our Downey employees and physicians, and behavioral health providers are on scene for members and patients who may need assistance.

The hospital, emergency and urgent care departments, and most of the Orchard Medical Office Building at Kaiser Permanente Downey Medical Center have reopened. We are working to reschedule all missed appointments that were cancelled due to this incident.

Kaiser Permanente is grateful for the employees and physicians who remained calm and acted appropriately. Special thanks goes to Security leaders and staff who were on the frontline ensuring the members, patients, visitors, employees and physicians were safe and secure.

We also want to thank the Downey Police Department and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department for their extraordinary response and support. The investigation by authorities continues. We’ll provide updates as new information is provided.
